The Emirate of Abu Dhabi is focused on the successful establishment of a knowledge based economy underpinned by a vibrant Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) base.
To support this vision, TDC is developing programs that facilitate the building of a best-in-class innovation ecosystem in the Emirate. The Takamul program is one of these initiatives that was specifically created to help UAE nationals, universities, enterprises (both large and SMEs), to realize the full potential of their innovative ideas.
With this in mind, TDC launched the Takamul program to facilitate the integration of each stage of the innovation lifecycle, which starts with the generation of ideas and successfully concludes with the practical application of these ideas through innovative products and services. Initially, the Takamul program aims to increase the number of international patents granted to Abu Dhabi based entities. This will be achieved through:
 Conducting a series of patent awareness workshops for industry and academia
Providing legal and financial support for international patent filings

| About the Takamul name and logo |
|
Takamul (meaning “Integration”) describes the “integral” mathematical operation that is a cornerstone of calculus. In mathematics, an integral represents the sum of results for an equation between two points.
Similar to its mathematical namesake, Takamul’s ultimate mission is to facilitate the integration of each stage of the innovation cycle between the starting point (generating ideas) and the end state (the practical application of these ideas through innovative products, solutions and services).

This is illustrated in the program’s logo – an integral sign that begins with ideas (colored in grey) and transitions into application (colored in red).

| By The Numbers |
Patents are a critical part of the innovation process as they protect innovative ideas and provide a tool to support the transformation of these ideas into application. Given the importance of patents, innovators around the world from individual inventors to multi-nationals to universities continue to file for patents every year. In the US alone in 2010, over 200,000 patents were issued.
| Abu Dhabi is targeting more than a tenfold increase in the number of US patents granted to UAE based entities over the next 20 years. |
